I Hired A Professional Organizer And It Was Life-Changing ft. Horderly

Why?

I’ve always been curious about hiring a professional organizer, but always put it off. I had the impression it was something I could do myself — I just needed to take the time to do it. After moving into our place in Los Angeles a little over a year ago, I realized I really could not do it myself. I kept putting it off. I was extremely overwhelmed with the lack of organization and the lack of space — so much so that it was affecting my daily productivity.

We downsized quite a bit, so while it felt like we had pared things down prior to the move, there was still more to be done. I didn’t even know where to start. The kitchen was definitely the worst spot in the house. Our old kitchen in Orange County was double the size — so keeping things organized was never an issue there. Here, on the other hand, the kitchen is a lot smaller — we have no pantry and no place to add storage even if we wanted to. The cabinets became cluttered and even though I attempted to put organization products in place, they either never stuck or they weren’t enough to make a difference.

I also really struggled with our laundry room closet. We don’t have a garage or extra storage in our new place so this room ended up being the catch-all for basically anything random. I definitely needed help.

Yes, yikes.

The Process

Enter Horderly, a professional organizing service that comes to your house and gets the job DONE. Everything I’ve been putting off for the past year, they were able to get done in a single day. A SINGLE DAY.

The team arrived early and immediately got to work — splitting up to work on the kitchen and laundry room at the same time. The first step entailed taking EVERYTHING out of both rooms and dividing them into categories. I was able to hide away and get some work done while they did this. Then, when they were ready for me they called me downstairs to make some decisions.

It is EXTREMELY eye-opening to see all your stuff grouped by category. I can’t tell you how many times I looked at something and said: “I didn’t even know I had this!” We went through each pile as I decided what to keep and what to toss. The team asked amazing questions that really put things into perspective like “how often do you use this?” which make you realize there are some unnecessary things you are hanging on to.

This is my pile of donations! I had no idea I even had this much stuff I didn’t use.

Once I went through and picked out what to keep and what to toss, the team grouped everything into donate, sell, or keep. Then they put everything in place as it would be with the organization products, almost as a “rough draft”. They walked me through the thought process behind everything and why they decided to group certain things together. During that time I can make any changes. Then, they head off to get the containers.

They came back and put everything in its place. I waited upstairs SO giddy as if I was on an HGTV show waiting for the big reveal.

The Aftermath

The second I saw my new kitchen and laundry room I knew it was going to improve my quality of life. Every single thing had a place and a purpose and even more importantly – everything had a LABEL. I’ve labeled things here and there in the past, but Horderly labels everything.

There is something that happens to your brain when you see a label — it’s SO hard to put something there that doesn’t belong there. It doesn’t feel right. This was a total gamechanger for me. My kitchen is ALWAYS clean and things are always put back. Every drawer and cabinet stays immaculate. It’s dreamy to live in! I feel more productive and I actually ENJOY being in the two places I dreaded most — the kitchen and the laundry room. I don’t hate doing laundry or cooking dinner anymore — and that’s an amazing feeling.

Overall

Overall, I am SO thankful to have worked with Horderly on these projects. I would say if you’re interested in getting a professional organizer like Horderly — go for it. It’s impossible to be good at everything, and if organizing doesn’t come naturally to you – it’s nice to have the help, hands, and mind of someone who does it professionally. Horderly offers services in both Southern California and the North East. Find out more about working with them here.

Wow! I love the description of the process, the idea of hiring professionals definitely feels less scary now that I’ve had a chance to see what would actually happen. I love the before and after pics, and I especially like that the team did it in a single day!

I love the idea of hiring a home organizer for your home but personally, organizing the things by myself serves as my meditation haha. It helps me relax when I’m stressed about life. It’s like as I declutter my things, my mind declutters as well. But, yeah with your post I think I’m going to hire a professional organizer when I don’t have time anymore haha thanks for this!
