2 Ways To Wear Plaid

Plaid is such a timeless pattern that seems to last through the decades. I can pretty much guarantee that my plaid flannels will still be in style every time the fall and winter seasons roll around. I think when it comes to wearing plaid, many of us play it safe. Because it is so bold, we are afraid to break the rules and pair it with anything else that might compete.

I’ve teamed up with Target to style plaid two different ways for you all: classic and daring. Hopefully it inspires you to try something new and out of your comfort zone when it comes to wearing plaid.

First, I’ve styled plaid in a classic way. This black-and-white plaid dress from the Adam Lippes for Target collection is such a classic silhouette paired with a chic but minimalistic plaid print. I chose to pair it with a black-and-white belt, simple black pumps, and classic black cat-eye sunglasses. This look is one that could have been worn 10 years ago and still have been in style—and I see it still being in style 10 years in the future.

The key to keeping it classic with plaid:
  • Keep accessories to a minimum
  • Go with a classic silhouette
  • Choose neutral colors

My second look is a little more daring, with two pieces being plaid. The long vest has a large plaid print, which is bold and more unique, since we are used to seeing plaid on a smaller scale. I paired it with a simple black turtleneck to keep the attention on the vest, classic skinny jeans, and black-and-white plaid pumps.

Tips to going more daring with plaid:
  • Plaid on plaid print “mixing”: Make sure the plaids are not the same size, and the colors are similar. (In my look, I chose a large plaid print paired with a small plaid print.)  
  • Add an unexpected color: A pop of color paired with plaid adds a bolder twist to the look.
  • Layers: Don’t be afraid to layer things over and under your plaid outfit—even if it is also plaid!
