I had these old bamboo placemats that I bought for maybe $2 at Ross when we first moved into our place. They have worked as a temporary solution but I couldn’t help but feel like I was eating at a sushi restaurant every time I sat down to have dinner. Solution? Tassles.
Isn’t that always the solution? If it’s not…it should be. I think these placemats have a much more bohemian vibe to them.
Steps are as follows:
-1: You will need black string, a piece of cardboard, bamboo placemats, a needle and scissors.
-2: Start wrapping the string around the cardboard to desired thickness. I did about 3/4 of an inch.
-3: Once you’ve wrapped it around to your desired thickness, cut the string and cut another piece of string about 2.5-3 inches long. Tie this and double knot it on one end of the cardboard.
-4: Cut the other end of string, opposite from the end you tied the knot on.
-5: Cut another piece of string about 2.5-3 inches and wrap it around the top half of the strings. Double knot it and clip the edges. Then trim the bottom of the threads to make sure they all line up straight.
-6: Use a needle to thread the top of the tassle through the placemat, double knot it, and trim the edges.
& Repeat!
I’m going to be honest, this job is tedious and will take you awhile. I would do it while catching up on some TV! I did a placemat a day while catching up on a show each time. Made it feel like an enjoyable DIY instead of a DI-Whyyyy.
LOL a small sushi restaurant. You crack me up. What a great idea! I love tassels.
Wat a great idea! Love it!
Loving tassels lately! These turned out great.
Cute!
These are awesome!! I'm looking for some placemats of my own so maybe I'll do this too!
Hey, by the way, I'm having a giveaway on my blog this week. Check it out if you like winning free stuff. 😉
This is such a cute idea! Definitely gives them more of a Bohemian vibe…
