When we first started our house hunt, we dreamed of finding a 3 bedroom place so we could have a guest bedroom for when people come to visit.  Property prices in Orange County are insane, and after looking at both 3 bedrooms and 2 bedrooms, we knew we would have to make some major compromises to get a third bedroom, which would have been a luxury, but nothing necessary right now.

Our new place has two bedrooms, so J’s office will have to double as a guest bedroom.  We need the room to be extremely multi-functional without being uncomfortable or cluttered.  We have guests pretty often (at least once a month) so I wanted to find a permanent fixture that would be easy to set up and comfortable for our guests.  I’ve spent quite a bit of time looking into both daybeds and sleeper sofas and I can see the ups and downs of each option.

Obviously the daybed lacks the aesthetics of a sleeper sofa – they just aren’t as pretty to look at! What daybeds lack in looks, they make up for in comfort.  Most sleeper sofas are not comfortable, and feel like you’re on a sleeper sofa – not a bed.  A daybed is a bed after all, and in turn it will feel more comfortable.  Another daybed plus is that they are usually cheaper than sleeper sofas, which is nice for us since we are hoping down the road to have a place with more bedrooms, so investing in a sleeper sofa might not make sense.

I think I’ve got my mind made up on which one we are going to go with… can you take a guess?

Also, if you have any experience with daybeds and/or sleeper sofas let me know!

I can't give any daybed vs. sleeper sofa advice from experience, but I will say that I've had some weird love for daybeds for as long as I can remember. I think it would be a fun alternative to perhaps a more traditional route. Either way, I can't wait to see how you style the second bedroom! Congratulations on the house, so exciting!

I am a big daybed fan and generally haven't ever been comfortable on a sleeper sofa. The good thing about a daybed is that you can throw a bunch of big pillows on it and dress it up like a sofa. And since your trying to work it into an office, it doesn't sound like you need a piece that's going to get a ton of sitting use anyway. I asked for a daybed when I was 12 and am 31 now with that same daybed in one of my guest rooms. Another plus- they never really go out of style!!

I'm with you, sleeper sofas tend to look better but day beds are much more comfortable. My mom used to have one (a day bed) in the living room growing up, though it looked much more like a regular bed and was rarely used for sitting. It's now in the guest bedroom. It really comes down to what you like and what works best for you.

I actually think a daybed has much more design appeal than the sleeper sofa! Not to mention way less of a hassle to move in the future

    Hey Hannah,

I think you might have the solution by now. I just wanted to share my opinion on the debate. Yes, I will always go with the sleeper sofas.

With the level of comfort and the style they have, sleepers are always ahead of daybeds. Even you have mentioned that daybeds lack the aesthetics of a sleeper sofa.
