Hey guys! Today I’m excited to have Amanda from Write In Tights sharing her double doors makeover on a budget! She has the most adorable family and gorgeous photography, so her blog is a must read. Plus, girlfriend knows how to work a budget! I love her favorite space and I know you all will too. Take it away Amanda!

One of my favorite spaces in our home is the dining room, right inside our back double doors. Originally, we had darker, patterned curtains hanging that provided the comfort of privacy and a nice textile detail, but didn’t allow much light to shine through. Traditionally, dining rooms often only have a set of table and chairs and perhaps a hutch. This can be fabulous, but, in addition to our dining room table, I wanted to do something with the space right inside the doors that was a little more my own and welcoming–even at the backdoor. I decided to give the area an entirely new configuration…
I searched online to find just the right curtains and found an amazing deal here. They have white sheer panels as low as $3.99! I ordered four panels, along with double curtain rods, to ensure privacy and encourage a flowing look. I sized the panels to be longer than the door so that they would pile just enough on the floor. Of course, my nine-year-old son opens the left door continuously throughout the day, so a simple loose knot still provides a similar effect without the panel getting shut in the door!
I frequently look for used items here. It’s a fabulous site that provides great opportunities to upcycle and often provide your own touch to older items for your home. I stumbled upon this rocking chair a few years ago and snagged it up right away. It was a light brown with an off-white pillow cushion on it. I removed the cushion, sanded the chair, and gave it a fresh coat of white paint. These rockers are usually found on outside porches, but I love to have it inside in the corner for a comfy read or to rock my nine-month-old. I draped a thrifted knitted throw over it, grabbed a clearance pillow here, and found a faux-sheepskin rug at a local discount store. I think it brings our little corner together nicely.
I often have a jacket or scarf hanging on the wall so that I can quickly grab it on the way out. I found a bird wall-hanging hook from here, along with a doormat on clearance, around Halloween time (now is the perfect time to look for birds and owls!). It was originally black, so I spray painted it white to go with my personal decor style.
Never be afraid to step outside of tradition to find what suits you and your home best! Be willing to do a little work to create a space of your own–you will be glad you did. And, keep an eye out for used or clearance items that can accent an area and bring it together to be just what you were looking for.
Here is a list of items I purchased and the general overall prices:
Curtain panels x4: $16
Double curtain rods x2: $8
Rocking chair: $0
Quart of white paint and can of white spray paint: $14
Throw pillow: $7
Knitted throw: $0.75
Doormat: $5
Bird wall-hanging hook: $2
Faux-sheepskin rug: $20
TOTAL: $72.75
